蒔田駅近くの神社入口にある狛犬像です。「魔よけ」とされていますが、由来は古代インドから伝承されたものです。
口を開けた犬が(阿/a)。口を閉じた犬が(吽/hum) 。ツインで「オーム/ahum」という発声になります。
古代インドのサンスクリットの悉曇文字（梵字）において、a（阿）は全く妨げのない状態で口を大きく開いたときの音、hum(吽）は口を完全に閉じたときの音。悉曇文字の字母の配列は、口を大きく開いたa（阿）から始まり、口を完全に閉じたhum(吽）で終わっており、そこから「阿吽」は宇宙の始まりから終わりまでを表す言葉とされました。
人間は生まれる時に初めての息を吸い、そして死ぬ時に「ふっ」と息を吐いてこの世を去っていく。時間という観念が無くなり、そこに「阿吽」があるのでしょうね。
